The Dutch government confirms the major societal and economic importance of underground hydrogen storage

Last week, the Dutch government confirmed the major societal and economic importance of underground hydrogen storage as a crucial part of the future energy system. At Wind Meets Gas in Groningen, Minister Stientje van Veldhoven, Minister of Climate Policy and Green Growth, presented the public service obligation decision (Service of General Economic Interest, or SGEI) for HyStock hydrogen storage.

Hydrogen storage is an essential link in a future energy system in which hydrogen production, transport, storage and consumption must be well coordinated. Storing hydrogen on a large scale makes sustainable energy available when industry and society need it.

Through HyStock, Gasunie, a partner in Netherlands Hydrogen Land, is helping to build this crucial link in the hydrogen chain. Underground hydrogen storage provides flexibility, security of supply and a resilient energy system. The decision marks the next step in developing an integrated Dutch and European hydrogen system.
