Rotterdam hydrogen pipeline filled

The first major pipeline section of the Dutch hydrogen network in Rotterdam has been filled with hydrogen. This is a significant step in the realization of the hydrogen infrastructure that will soon form the backbone of the Rotterdam, Dutch, and ultimately European hydrogen market. To fill the 32-kilometer-long pipeline, 32 tons of green hydrogen were delivered.

A link in the Northwest European hydrogen infrastructure

Hynetwork, a subsidiary of Gasunie, is developing and realizing the national hydrogen network. The Rotterdam pipeline section forms a crucial link between the port and industrial consumers in the region and will be connected to the Dutch hydrogen network. Through the Delta Rhine Corridor, Rotterdam will be connected to industry in the Netherlands, as well as to Germany and the broader Northwest European hydrogen infrastructure; a foundation for industrial sustainability and the strengthening of European energy security.

Collaboration with partners is essential

The filling operations were carried out in collaboration with Plug Power Inc. Niels van Pagee (Manager of Hydrogen Network Netherlands): "It was a process with its fair share of challenges. In a short time and with a tight deadline, dozens of trailers with green hydrogen had to be transported from Northern Germany to the Maasvlakte, where we had set up a temporary filling location."

This project demonstrates how vital specialized partners are in order to realize the necessary infrastructure safely and efficiently. For Gasunie, collaboration with partners is a key building block in the development of the Dutch and European hydrogen network.

Pride

Van Pagee: "What really made the difference for me was the commitment and professionalism of all the teams involved. By maintaining open communication, trusting one another, and utilizing everyone's expertise, we established a plan together and managed it strictly. This is reflected in the result: the filling of the pipeline went smoothly and without any problems. I am proud to have been a part of this."
