Municipality of Amsterdam contributes to development of hydrogen network H2avennet

The Executive Board of the municipality of Amsterdam wants to contribute €4 million to the development of the local hydrogen network for the Amsterdam port area: H2avennet. With this subsidy from the Amsterdam Climate and Energy Fund, the municipality is giving a significant boost to the development of the network and thereby to the further growth of a hydrogen economy in the Port of Amsterdam.

Alderman Zita Pels (Sustainability, Energy Transition and Circular Economy), on this contribution to H2avennet: "With a hydrogen network, we can really make major strides in reducing CO2 emissions. We hope that the national government will also take its responsibility here. For a successful hydrogen economy, support for production, import and use of hydrogen is needed, as well as timely realization of the national hydrogen network with large-scale storage."

Public hydrogen distribution network

H2avennet is a public hydrogen distribution network for the Amsterdam port area, developed by Firan (subsidiary of Alliander), in collaboration with Port of Amsterdam. The network should give companies in the port area access to sustainable hydrogen and makes it possible to connect production, import and use. H2avennet thus forms a crucial link in the energy infrastructure needed for the sustainability of industry, mobility and logistics in the Amsterdam port area.

Connection to national hydrogen network

H2avennet will be constructed as a local network with low pressure between 8 and 16 bar. It will be designed in such a way that it can later be connected to the national hydrogen transport network being developed by HNS. Firan is currently working on the detailed design, which forms the basis for construction and management. Part of this is a connection between the Amsterdam port on the south side of the North Sea Canal and the HoogTij business park in the municipality of Zaanstad. Firan plans to make an investment decision in 2026.

Future-proof hydrogen network an essential precondition

Hydrogen plays an important role on the path to a climate-neutral port and city. A future-proof hydrogen network is an essential precondition for stimulating the hydrogen economy in the Amsterdam port area. We therefore want to stay ahead of market development with the development of H2avennet. Gert-Jan Nieuwenhuizen, Executive Director New Business at Port of Amsterdam: "Leadership and direction from the government are indispensable in this transition. We are therefore very pleased with the contribution from the Climate and Energy Fund of the municipality of Amsterdam to H2avennet, which gives an important boost to the development of the local hydrogen network." The hydrogen network is expected to be operational from 2028.
