Gasunie and Thyssengas sign agreement for cross-border hydrogen infrastructure

Dutch Gasunie subsidiary Hynetwork, German Thyssengas H2 and Gasunie Deutschland want to develop a cross-border hydrogen infrastructure between the Netherlands and Germany. They have signed an agreement for the joint realization of this infrastructure. The connection will largely consist of existing natural gas pipelines, which will be converted for hydrogen transport.

The border points in Oude Statenzijl (Groningen) and Vlieghuis (Drenthe) will form an important link to connect the Dutch industrial regions, import routes and storage and production facilities with industrial regions in Germany and the rest of Northwest Europe.

Agreements needed for safe and reliable hydrogen transport

The agreement contains important technical and organizational matters, including planning, location, capacity and other specifications. Such agreements are necessary to be able to transport hydrogen safely and reliably across the border. The signing of these agreements is a good first step towards the full realization of multiple cross-border hydrogen connections between the Netherlands and Germany.

Cross-border trade and transport of hydrogen

Helmie Botter, director of hydrogen transport at Gasunie: 'For a well-functioning hydrogen market in Northwest Europe, cross-border trade and transport of hydrogen is of essential importance. With the agreements made, we not only enable transport via our infrastructure between the Netherlands and Germany (the Ruhr area), but also with Denmark. We strive for an integrated hydrogen market and work closely with our fellow network operators to make cross-border transport as easy as possible'.
